Sorry, I was asking because I didn't have time to keep searching.  The answer is that the repo 
updated their checksum algorithm and the fix is 
http://www.openfusion.net/linux/yum_error_performing_checksum.

FWIW, I'm not sure yum list works.  This is what I get:

zlib.i386    1.2.3-7.el5    installed

Maybe because our yum is that old.

But thanks, I found the answer trying to find out how to contact the package maintainers.
