Never cared, but since I'm a crazy person who uses Gentoo, I'd go with the timestamp on /stage*bz2 since I never end up deleting those.  Although there's probably a log in emerge/portage.
As others mentioned the SSH/TLS keys make sense.

Theoretically you could look at your local DNS server config files and see when the line defining server7.local was added. (Would this also be in LDAP? I haven't tried that yet.)

Of course there's alway punching the serial number into your accounting software and seeing what invoice date comes up.
