The issue with VMWare is that they use a proprietary kernel driver.  The 
kernel guys think that's illegal and don't provide a stable kernel API. 
  The VMWare installer (server anyway) builds modules that match your 
kernel.  But if you upgrade the kernel you could find that VMWare no 
longer works.  So there's a little more to this than "we haven't tried 
it yet."
