It's just a way to manage initializations scripts. Rather than having to
keep editing /etc/bashrc, /etc/csh.cshrc and whatever other files exist
(depending on how many shells you have installed) for initilization, you
can just add things in profile.d, and they get picked up by looping in
basrc, etc.
It should ease maintenance.
