[CLUE-Tech] more password stuff

I had to kill the pwconv process, because it was simply taking too long.  
I then tried this:

[root at fimble etc]# passwd nickski
Changing password for user nickski.
New password: 
Retype new password: 
passwd: User not known to the underlying authentication module

I have never seen this before, and am very concerned by this.  Does anyone 
know what to do about these password problems?
