LinuxWorld Goes Mainstream
     High-tech giants embrace free operating
system

Backed by a growing parade of computer-industry
heavyweights, the Linux movement rallied
yesterday in San Jose
     for its biggest-ever trade show. 

     LinuxWorld Conference and Expo was in past
 years the province mainly of little-known
distributors
 and developers of the upstart computer-operating
system,
 but this year the show floor is dominated by
giant
 booths sponsored by the
 likes of Compaq, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM
 and even Sun Microsystems. 

     Notably but not surprisingly absent was
Microsoft.
 Linux, which is developed cooperatively by
thousands of
     developers around the world and available
free to
 anyone who wants to use it, is posing an
increasingly credible
     threat, at least in some markets, to
Microsoft's Windows
 operating systems.
